Switzerland, an itch behind the left ear, and Italy
I am in Switzerland. Don’t ask me how I got there. But more importantly; Svenbärd dropped in this morning. “Mr. Bunzenburner,” he said, as he’s always polite and formal after a long hiatus between our meetings. “How are you doing this fine morning?” I stretched my paws, as I had just emerged from a crevice underneath the log cabin that is my current address –I believe not far from a town called Kapellbrücke-, flexed my ears, and there he was, swooping down from the bluest of skies. “I’m ok,” I told him. “I saved the life of 4 chicken,… well three really, and lived a bohemian life of carrots and leftover McDonalds in the company of a manic-depressive homeless person. But I had to leave when his social worker fell in love with me.” Svenbärd cocked his head, peering down left-eyed with the impassive gaze that only an adult Fulmar can muster, and said; “I know.” “How so?” I inquired. “Well, it wasn’t exactly hard to track you down,” he said, pecking away at what looked like the remains of some unfortunate crustacean, “the animals are talking about you. I believe Elsa, Ethel and Paris have started quite a little gossip circus about a mysterious and resourceful rabbit called Ben.” “Oh no,” I said, not immediately sure what else to mention. “But that’s not what I came to tell you.” “It isn’t?” I asked, dumbfounded at the effortlessness with which I’d been tracked down. Soon, I fretted, people and bunny (or any other animal) alike would come to recognize me in a frenzy of star-struck mania. In fact, the black dye with which I have so assiduously disguised my formidable identity has started to wear off in irregular cow patches on account of all the acid rain that outdoors living has visited upon me. “It’s Cassandra,” Svenbärd said severely, “she needs to see you, and…” he continued, pointing the feathery tip of his wing at my nose to let him finish, “she couldn’t come herself. That’s why she sent me to get the word out to you.” “But how? What?!” “She couldn’t tell me more. She will explain everything, but she did mention that you’d be very interested to hear what she has to say.” I thought about this for a moment, until I experienced an itchy feeling behind the left ear that required an urgent going at with my left back-paw. Then I thought about it some more and asked; “Where is she now?” Svenbärd lifted his beak to the fresh mountain wind as if to read therein the answer to my question. “Italy,” he said.
